Getting Off Birth Control

Getting off birth control should not be a complicated task especially if you are planning to get pregnant. However, no two women have the same response or reaction when it comes to getting off the birth control method they're using.

It advisable to consult your OB-GYN to make sure you are on the right track. Another recommended practice is to take folic acid once you stopped using any form of birth control. Folic acid prevents pregnancy problems especially after getting off birth control as it helps strengthen the woman's reproductive system.

Some guidelines when getting off birth control

  • Condom – Once you stop using a condom [male or female], it is okay to start conceiving right away. Condom is a barrier birth control method that does not affect the reproduction of the female egg and the reproductive system itself.
  • Coil – The coil is also a barrier method that once stopped you can start trying to conceive after you have it removed.
  • Diaphragm – This works just like the coil and condom. After you remove it, it is safe to conceive right away.
  • Spermicides – After using spermicides, you can start trying to conceive without the worry.
  • The Pill – The pill is a hormone-based birth control method which affects a woman’s reproductive system. Getting off birth control pills require 3 normal menstrual cycles before you try to conceive. This is to give your body the time to flush out the hormones from the pills you took. During this period, it is advisable to use a barrier method such as condom or diaphragm.
  • Injectable – Since injectables are also hormone-based, it is essential to wait for 3 menstrual cycles before you try to conceive. It is also advisable to use a condom or diaphragm during this period.
